About this Piece

The 1877 premiere of Swan Lake was less a triumphal entry into the classical canon and more a spectacular descent into a theatrical abyss. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who accepted the Bolshoi commission primarily for a fee of 800 rubles and a private urge to elevate a "secondary" art form, was met with near-universal derision. Critics dismissed his score as "too Wagnerian" while the choreographer, Julius Reisinger, helpfully labeled the music "undanceable." The debut was further complicated by a delicious scandal involving the original prima ballerina, who was purged from the cast after selling a high-ranking official's jewelry to fund her elopement with a fellow dancer. The ubiquitous Dance of the Little Swans represents a study in historical irony. While the image of four dancers in linked unison is now iconic, this specific choreography was a posthumous addition by Lev Ivanov for the 1895 revival, intended to mimic the defensive huddling of young birds. For the pianist, this movement demands a brittle, clockwork precision in its original key of F# minor, mirroring the sixteen sideways pas de chat. One must maintain a crystalline, leggiero articulation to evoke the original woodwind textures without the blurring of the sustain pedal. It remains a masterpiece born of Tchaikovsky’s paralyzing self-doubt; after hearing Delibes’s Sylvia in Vienna, he famously declared that had he known such grace was possible, he would never have written a note of his own work.
